Volunteer Co-ordinators

Could you be a Volunteer Transport Co-ordinator?

The Care Group Co-ordinators are at the heart of the Care Group’s transport service. They take the phone calls from patients needing help and then arrange transport with one of the team of drivers. Unfortunately, not all requests can be fulfilled, depending on driver availability.

How much time is involved?

  • Co-ordinators arrange amongst themselves when each will be on duty and provide cover for each other for absences.
  • This is a role that can be done at home in the co-ordinator’s own time. The phone has a voicemail facility so patients are able to leave requests for transport, which means that the duty co-ordinator does not have to be ‘on-call’ at all times.
  • The duty co-ordinator telephones or messages the team of drivers to find one available to undertake the drive request and then calls the patient back to confirm.

Skills required

Co-ordinators will be taking calls from vulnerable people who may be anxious about their appointment, and may have disabilities and difficulties. Some patients may be lonely and isolated and welcome the chance to chat with a friendly person at the end of the phone. The following personal qualities and skills are essential:

  • kindness and compassion
  • patience and calmness
  • accurate record keeping skills
  • telephone communication skills
  • ability to use a Smartphone for calls and messaging
